Official Setup Guide

Secure Your Digital Assets with Confidence

Welcome to the beginning of your journey with Ledger. Follow this guide to set up your device, install Ledger Live, and take full control of your cryptocurrency.

Why You Made the Right Choice

In the world of cryptocurrency, security is paramount. By choosing a Ledger hardware wallet, you are taking the most important step towards true ownership of your digital assets.

Unlike software wallets or exchanges, Ledger keeps your private keys offline—isolated from internet-connected devices where hackers lurk. This "cold storage" approach ensures that even if your computer is compromised, your funds remain safe inside the secure element of your device.

Complete Setup in 6 Steps

Follow these instructions carefully to ensure your device is configured correctly.

1

Unbox & Inspect

Start by unboxing your Ledger device. Inside the box, you should find the device itself, a USB cable, a keychain, and several recovery sheets.

Security Check: Ensure the device was not pre-configured. Ledger devices never come with a PIN code or recovery phrase already set up. If your device asks for a PIN immediately upon powering on for the first time, do not use it and contact Ledger support immediately.
2

Install Ledger Live

Ledger Live is the official companion app for your hardware wallet. It allows you to manage your accounts, send and receive crypto, and update your device.

  • Go to ledger.com/ledger-live.
  • Download the version compatible with your operating system (Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS, or Android).
  • Install and launch the application.
3

Initialize Your Device

Connect your Ledger to your computer or smartphone using the provided USB cable. Follow the on-screen instructions on the device itself.

You will be asked to choose a PIN code. This code can be 4 to 8 digits long. We recommend using an 8-digit PIN for maximum security. You will need this PIN every time you unlock your device.

4

Secure Your Recovery Phrase

This is the most critical step. Your device will generate a 24-word recovery phrase. This phrase is the only backup of your private keys.

Golden Rules of Recovery

  • Write down the 24 words on the provided recovery sheet.
  • Double-check the spelling and order of every word.
  • NEVER type these words into a computer, phone, or take a photo of them.
  • NEVER share these words with anyone, including Ledger support.
  • Store the sheet in a secure, fireproof location.
5

Install Apps

Open Ledger Live and navigate to the "My Ledger" (Manager) tab. You will need to allow Ledger Manager on your device.

From here, you can install apps for the cryptocurrencies you wish to manage, such as Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), Solana (SOL), and many others. Installing an app on the device allows it to calculate private keys for that specific blockchain.

6

Update Firmware

Ledger regularly releases firmware updates to improve security and add new features. In Ledger Live, you will see a notification if a firmware update is available.

Always keep your device updated to the latest firmware version to ensure the highest level of security for your assets. Follow the instructions in Ledger Live to perform the update safely.

Critical

Security Best Practices

Your funds are only as secure as your habits. Follow these rules religiously.

Keep it Offline

Your 24-word recovery phrase must never touch the internet. Do not save it in a password manager, cloud storage, or email draft. Paper or metal backups only.

Verify Transactions

Always verify the receiving address on the Ledger device screen, not just your computer screen. Malware can swap addresses on your computer clipboard.

Beware of Phishing

Ledger will never ask for your 24 words. If you receive an email, SMS, or call asking for them, it is a scam. Ignore and report it.

Common Troubleshooting

Device Not Recognized?

Try a different USB cable (ensure it transfers data, not just power) or a different USB port. Close other crypto wallets (Metamask, etc.) that might interfere.

Lost PIN Code?

If you forget your PIN, enter a wrong PIN 3 times to reset the device. You can then restore your device using your 24-word recovery phrase.

Firmware Update Stuck?

Disconnect the device, restart Ledger Live, and try again. If the issue persists, check the "Repair" tool in Ledger Live settings.
